The Department of English Translation and Interpreting was established within the body of the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences at Samsun University in 2019.
In order to meet the common communication needs in the globalising world, our department aims to train qualified translators and interpreters who have a sound grasp of their work fields, who have the necessary translation and interpreting skills and are able to transform the theoretical information they obtained to practice, and who have a wide world view to do translations and interpretations on various fields and subjects. In accordance with this purpose, theoretical and applied courses in English and Turkish are available at the department; therefore, students will be prepared for the profession by having translation and interpreting training for the field during their education. The students will also acquire detailed knowledge in research fields such as international relations, law, medicine, literature, diplomacy, and economics, and they will learn to translate in these fields and improve their communication skills in interpretation lessons. Moreover, by using translation technologies and learning a second foreign language during their education, they will be one step ahead in the market and benefit from rich employment opportunities.
In addition to the applied courses and interpreting courses in the fields such as international relations, law, medicine, literature, diplomacy, economics, and technical text translation, it is aimed to get translator and interpreter candidates qualified in all aspects by offering courses on various fields such as current issues, translation technologies, literature and text reviews, translation legislation and ethics. The graduates have the opportunity to be employed in institutions and organisations affiliated with the European Union and the Council of Europe, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Undersecretariat of Treasury and Foreign Trade, Turkish Grand National Assembly, Embassies and Consulates, relevant departments of universities, Turkish Radio and Television Association and other private television organisations, banks, international private companies, internationally organised conferences and meetings, private translation offices, and various publishing houses.
