Translation has always been an important means of transmission of information and communication over the course of centuries. Through translation, many various cultures have been easier to get through to and the acculturation of different nations and people all around the world has been elicited by way of various channels using translation and interpretation.
In today’s world of rapid progression in the fields of mainly technology, communication and networks of multinational and transnational societies, translation and interpretation have been more and more important than they were before. In our multi-cultural world of today, translation can be regarded as a way of cross-cultural communication and of transmitting any information in the modern day’s all spheres of life. With this notion in mind, it can be thought that the significance and prestige of translators and interpreters become more and more indispensable day by day. Herewith the training and education of qualified translators and interpreters with the skills needed to adjust and compete in today’s world of progression, gain more and more importance and magnitude, attributing more responsibility and assiduity to the institutions having the task and duty of training the competent and eligible translators and interpreters of our globalized world.
The main aim of the four-year degree program of Translation and Interpreting at the Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Samsun University is to train students to translate and interpret in English and Turkish and to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge in the way of becoming competent translators and interpreters. Our program has been based on both theoretical and practical respects of translation and interpretation, thus providing our students with all the necessary information and knowledge about translation studies while giving them a chance to practice their oral translating skills. Our department also enables students to get in contact with translation businesses and companies by not only inviting notable people about the field to our university but also providing them with the opportunity to have training at some certain translation companies and offices. In this way, students of the department have the advantage of making themselves acquainted with the translation businesses and services, which helps them to be more professional and competent in the field.
Our university also opens up an opportunity for our students to study at several EU universities under Erasmus cooperation with which links have been established under Erasmus terms. In this way students will be able to have different courses at different European universities and have notable experiences that will help them be more adept and professional translators and interpreters. In addition to translators and interpreters, the graduates will also be qualified to work at different positions such as editors or language consultants at Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry for EU Affairs, media organizations, embassies, non-governmental bodies, newspapers, TV stations, private organizations or any companies and corporations that are related to translation services.
As an essential study field of today’s multi-cultural world, the department of translation and interpreting of Samsun University, one of the most outstanding and notable departments of our country, is expecting its students at all times, welcoming them with an academic staff, expert at their field, a good number of social facilities and a beautiful nature unique in the Black Sea Region.
