Within the scope of the Career Planning Days held at Samsun Ömer Halisdemir Conference Hall on July 27, 28 and 29, 2020, students who will make a choice on the way to university came together with valuable professors from different departments. Within the scope of the program, where department introductions were made and students had the opportunity to find answers to all their questions; Samsun University, Faculty of Economics, Administrative and Social Sciences, Department of English Translation and Interpreting Assist. Prof. Dr. Ayşenur İplikçi Özden gave a speech introducing the department to the students and answered their questions. İplikçi Özden stated that Samsun University English Translation and Interpreting is a department that will start education by taking its first students in the 2020-2021 academic year with an academic staff consisting of faculty members who are experts in their fields and that it is a department that shows itself with both qualified education and many useful gains that students will acquire. While introducing the department to the students, İplikçi Özden mentioned the following:
“In today’s world, which has witnessed rapid developments in the fields of technology, communication and multinational social networks, the field of translation and interpreting has become even more important than before. In today’s multicultural world, translation can be considered as a form of intercultural communication and transmission of information in all areas of modern times. Based on this idea, the importance and prestige of translators and interpreters can be considered to be more and more indispensable. For this reason, the education and training of qualified translators and interpreters with the skills necessary to adapt to and compete in today’s developing world is gaining even greater prestige and importance, placing more effort and responsibility on the institutions that have the task of training competent and distinguished employees in this field. In our academic program, we aim to equip our translator candidates in every aspect by offering courses such as current issues, translation technologies, literature and text analysis, translation legislation and ethics, as well as applied courses and interpreting courses for fields such as international relations, law, medicine, literature, diplomacy, economics, technical text translations.”
İplikçi Özden also talked about internship, simultaneous interpreting training, double major program and Erasmus program opportunities, as well as the benefits and opportunities that graduates will have both in the workplace and in social life:
“Our graduates can be employed in institutions and organizations affiliated to the European Union and the Council of Europe, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the Undersecretariat of Treasury and Foreign Trade, the Turkish Grand National Assembly, Embassies and Consulates, the relevant departments of universities, TRT and other private television organizations, banks, international private companies, internationally organized conferences and meetings, translation companies. In addition, publishing houses can also be a good option for students who are interested in literature. In other words, students graduating from the department can become active market translators as the first goal of the department. As I mentioned before, they will have the opportunity to become translators within the EU in line with the contacts we will establish with EU institutions. They can further their careers as conference interpreters in the private sector or work in organizations that provide translation/interpreting services. To summarize, our department is a prestigious department with many employment options. We welcome our students to our department and I believe that we will do good work together.”
Samsun University English Translation and Interpreting Department’s conference was recorded as a productive event that answered the curiosities about the department with the interest and participation of students and academicians.
